What's in a Name?

How Do You Want to Label Your Child?

By Gwen Kopetzky

  • World figures in ill favor. I don't suggest Adolf for any child for obvious reasons. But I'm sure you have your own list of less-than-loved political leaders, rock stars, overpaid professional basketball players – whatever. I think naming a child after any well-known person is an area to be careful of in general. Just when you think you've named your little boy after your hometown's most revered baseball star, sure as shoot he'll do something stupid and get himself traded to another team.
  • High school and college friends. I know, it seems a little petty to pick on these throwbacks. But guess what? If you try to tell your husband you just happen to like the name Timothy Robert and it has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the high school football star and homecoming king's name was Timothy Robert, he's likely not to believe you. Ditto for a guy who tries to forward the name of one of the college cheerleaders.
  • Any name that is easy to rhyme. You know what I'm saying here. Kids are wonderful little limerick writers from a very early age. So think of every gros bodily function and body part you can. Your child's name – whether in long form or shortened – better not rhyme with any of them. Bartholomew, for instance, seems like a fairly safe name. Very difficult to rhyme. But shorten it to Bart and you're just inviting your child to be the victim of a schoolyard serenade. This is why, I believe, Michael continues to be such a popular name generation after generation. The only rhyme that really works is "I like Mike." That's a charmed life.
