Room for Baby to Grow
A Nursery with Lasting Appeal
By Jacqueline Rupp
Designing for twins has its own dilemmas. "Consider using coordinating solid and geometric fabrics for boys and solids and floral patterns for girls, and vary the solids and patterns for each child," says Cooper. "This also works well if the multiples are both boys and girls."

To ease the space crunch Blum advises clearing out any clutter first. Be very decisive in getting rid of any of the non-essentials. Next, find creative storage spaces. Cooper suggests going vertical. Use hutches and wall-mounted storage. Turn the closet into storage for both children with chests or open bookcases at the bottom and a rod for hanging clothes above.
Try to visually divide the space while having an overall style that flows throughout. Sound tricky? It's actually fairly straightforward: Place the bed furniture into opposing ends of the room. Cooper suggests placing the older child's bed against a wall for a daybed look to create a comfy sitting area. She also recommends coordinating bedding, noting that many popular designs are available in both infant and child styles.
If the room is feeling a bit small use some decorative illusions. "Visually enlarge cramped quarters by painting walls a cool light color," says Blum. "Colors such as blue, green and lavender tend to visually recede, therefore giving the illusion of a larger space. Strategically placed mirrors will also make a room feel larger by reflecting space and light."
