Positive Body Image During Pregnancy
A True Story of Health and Fitness
By Michele Batz
Until pregnancy, I was always in control of my weight. My self image revolved around how I looked thanks to all my athletic activities. Then I became pregnant. I felt like I had no more control! And I didn't. I gained 70 pounds during that nine-month period. My self-esteem started to decline. I was so happy to be pregnant but not happy about the way I looked. Of course, family members made comments about my weight, and then I started really watching what I ate. In the end, I became so focused on the comments that I started not enjoying the experience of being pregnant.
Do not let this happen to you. Enjoy this time of your life, and if people make comments to you, stick up for yourself and say something positive. Enroll in fitness classes for pregnant women. You will find all the support, compassion and expertise that's needed during this time. Stay out there and "glow," knowing you are bringing new life into the world.
