Home From the Hospital
Now What?
By Belinda Clarke
Taking Precautions
When asked, most new parents can list several issues that worried them upon bringing baby home. At the top of the list is Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), which is the diagnosis given for the sudden and unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year of age. According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, SIDS strikes nearly 5,000 infants each year, and it is unpredictable. However, there are some things new parents can do to help make their babies safer. For example, most newborn babies should sleep on their backs, provided they don't have any condition that would require them to sleep on their stomachs, as indicated by a pediatrician. In addition, new parents should avoid exposing their infants to secondhand smoke, as this has been linked in some studies to SIDS.
"I remember we agonized about putting him in his own crib, because we were scared he was going to stop breathing," recalls Moore. "But after a few nights of not sleeping at all due to gurgling and various noises he made, we had to make the move and put him in his crib in his own room. This made everyone happier because we were all getting a bit more sleep."
