Home From the Hospital
Now What?
By Belinda Clarke
Greg Heard, father of two and a developer of children's products, took the added step of purchasing an in-home monitor for his daughter's crib after she was diagnosed with Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV, which causes upper and lower respiratory illness in infants and young children. Unlike most motion detectors that indicate when movement is present, this particular monitor sounds an alarm if it does not detect baby movement for a period longer than 20 seconds. "We bought the monitor to 'help us' in checking in on her while she slept at night," says Heard. "We are more than happy with the peace of mind it offers and would recommend it to any parent that is in need of extra 'security' for their children."
While monitors can give parents an added sense of security while their children are sleeping, there is no evidence that such monitors can prevent SIDS, according to the National Institute of Child Heath and Human Development. In an effort to further ensure the safety of his (and other) newborns, Heard invented a new product called the Snibbie Sleeper. The sleeper, which is designed to comfort infants in a similar fashion to the traditional swaddle, is a "pouch" of sorts that snaps at the shoulders and ties at the waist.
