Now What?

"One evening after my daughter was born, I went in to check on her while she was sleeping," Heard says. "To my surprise, her blanket was over her head, and she was struggling to get it away from her face." This incident was the impetus for him to create the sleeper, which was developed to help minimize the risk of babies getting tangled up in their blankets and suffocating. Heard says the sleeper "is an excellent solution for babies who always manage to wiggle their way out of the perfect swaddle."

Helpful Advice
In addition to specific equipment or gadgets that can help make the new baby adjustment a smooth one, many parents say that good old-fashioned practical advice has been an invaluable asset. "We read somewhere that vacuuming was a good way to get a crying baby to sleep," says Moore. "My husband tried it, and it became our best tactic. He would put the baby in a sling and vacuum the living room. It worked every time."

Sometimes it helps to turn to family members for advice. Shel Franco, mother of two from Erie, Pa., looked to her own mother for guidance. "When I had my first baby by C-section, my mother was here for three weeks to help out. I was so exhausted," Franco remembers. "One of the first things I found despairing was the amount of breastfeeding I was doing. I really wanted to quit." Instead, she shared her anxiety with her mom and her husband.
