Home From the Hospital

Now What?

"My mom, a woman who never nursed more than four weeks, told me just to hang in there, to give it 90 days," Franco says. "She said if I still felt the same way after 90 days I should quit and walk away without guilt. She was so wise! It was the best advice I received. By the time 90 days rolled around, I was so in love with my son and so in love with nursing that I never entertained the thought of quitting."

Greg Clarke, father of a premature baby born at 32 weeks, found that the doctor's advice to practice Kangaroo Care, or skin-to-skin contact with his baby, was the best guidance he ever received.

"I wanted so much to help him thrive, especially because he was so early and so small," says Clarke. "Putting my baby on my bare chest for long periods of time in the hospital, and even after we got home, was therapeutic for both of us." Clarke adds that this practice of having the baby close to him continued even after his son hit the 40-week mark. "Now, I like to wear him in a baby carrier when I'm working around the house," he says. "I am pretty sure he can feel my heartbeat, and I think it soothes him."

Remember, every new family has a period of settling in after the birth of a new baby. After a while, when you finally get into a regular routine, you will look back on the first few weeks as a challenge and an experience you will never forget.
