The Camera is Rolling...
Tami Pelles and her husband reside in Pendleton, Ore. Their latest addition, a boy, was born at the same hospital in Walla Walla, Wash. as was their first child. Both births were captured on videotape.

Pelles's sister videotaped the second birth. Coincidentally, Pelles videotaped her sister's second birth at the same hospital. "I am so grateful to have the video because I had my eyes closed a lot of the time," Pelles says. The video offers her a different view of her son's birth -- being able to see it from the eye of a bystander. In addition to seeing her son's birth, "I can hear my mother and sisters encouraging me during the pushing stage and I can hear the joyful sobbing that accompanied his arrival. It's very sweet."

video camera Sara and her husband, Tom, from Jerome, Idaho videotaped the birth of their baby. "We weren't allowed to tape anything graphic. My doctor didn't approve of that," Sara says. "So, we propped the tripod above my head and we have a tape anyone can watch. I would regret not having it ... you forget so much!"

Sara says that if parents aren't sure if they want to produce a tape, they should go ahead and make one anyway. In the unlikely event that they regret having the tape, they could destroy it. "But if they don't have a tape, they can never go back and make one," Sara says. "That day is gone forever."

The Professional Point of View
Dr. Karman Torbati is an obstetrician and gynecologist in Los Angeles. Dr. Torbati allows his patients to videotape their birth experiences from the angle of their choice. His patients are free to display the tape as they wish. "If they want to show the tape during Saturday night entertainment with guests, that's fine with me," says Dr. Torbati.
