Belly Casting

Birth Art to Capture Your Pregnancy

By Laura Cone

Banack says belly casting is an art form. Women often hang the belly casts on their walls. She says some people decorate them in a simple way or paint them a warm cream color. Other people like to create more elaborate belly casts and use the surface as one might use a scrapbook page.

"Most women don't have a lot of mementoes from when they were pregnant," Banack says. "So many women don't even have a picture of themselves from when they were pregnant because they were feeling heavy and overweight. People wanting to do something to remember their pregnancy either do pictures with photographers or they do a belly cast because it's an art form they can use and hang on the wall."

To get started with your own belly cast, you will need to purchase a kit from a local maternity store or online. Then make sure you have a bucket of hot water in which to dip the strips of plaster bandages.

Other items you will need include drop cloth (or an old sheet works just as well) to protect the floor, lubrication for the mother's belly, sandpaper and art supplies to decorate the cast, such as acrylic paint, shellac or glaze.

While some women prefer belly casts or belly bowls to photographs or portraits, one thing is clear: more and more women choose to remember their pregnancies and cherish the memories of a special time in their lives.
