Cord Blood Storage
Preserving a Lifeline for the Future
By Gwen Morrison
Newell spent considerable amounts of time providing Beach and her husband with pertinent information about cord blood storage. "He e-mailed us research article after research article on the practice of harvesting cord blood from newborns," says Beach. "He had been exploring this research and had come to believe that it was a very underestimated area of cancer research."
After reading all the information that Newell sent them, the Beaches decided to explore it even further. "We decided to contact several agencies that specialized in this type of process," she says. "We decided that it was not only necessary, but was an inexpensive insurance policy."
It was 1998 when Beach delivered her first son, and she harvested his stem cells with the support of the California Cryobank. "The year 2000 brought us another boy and another harvest, and by the end of 2002, we had another child and yet another harvest."
Beach is confident that their choice to harvest the cord blood and store it for the future was one of the best decisions they could make for their children's futures. "There are a lot of unknowns regarding stem cell and cord blood," she says. "But all signs are pointing toward cures for such things as cancer, diabetes and more. With my mother having had breast cancer and my aunt and grandfather having both passed away from cancer, the question for us is, 'Why wouldn't we harvest?'"
Beach is saddened by the loss of her friend and will forever wonder if he might have been saved by the one thing that he so strongly urged her to investigate for her own children.
