Houseguests and Newborns
Getting Help without the Hassle
By Katherine Bontrager
Carrico says if it's not possible to persuade visitors to stay in nearby hotels, make sure to implement some loose house rules about keeping things tidy and helping in the kitchen and with errands. Start heading off the mad rush of guests with the "The baby's here!" phone calls. "When your husband, partner or whomever is designated to make the phone calls contacts friends and family, ask him to communicate politely that you'd all appreciate some time to rest and be alone with the baby and to call in advance of visiting," Carrico advises.
"In addition to guests, new parents can expect a barrage of congratulatory phone calls," Carrico adds. "Change your voicemail or answering machine message to include all the details about the birth, such as: 'Thanks for calling the Carrico family. Baby X arrived on (date) at (time) and weighed in at (weight). We're all home, doing well and looking forward to speaking to you soon. Please leave us a message and understand if it takes us a few days to get back to you!'"
And of course, it's integral to set limits. Your body, emotions and life have just been through the spin cycle, so it will take time to settle back into this new life.
"When it comes to a newborn, grandparents can be wonderful houseguests to help with the baby, shop, cook and provide a lot of reassurance," says Debbie Mandel, author of Turn On Your Inner Light: Fitness for Body, Mind and Soul
