Similarly, Dr. Streeter adds that many "homegrown" induction techniques may be unsafe. For instance, she says that she generally does not recommend that mothers use castor oil to encourage labor. "There is at least one study suggesting it may increase the risk of passage of meconium," says Dr. Streeter.

Nipple stimulation, she says, is another potentially dangerous induction method. Although this method causes the release of oxytocin, Dr. Streeter warns that there is a risk of over-stimulating the uterus. Again, this can impede blood flow to the baby. Herbal combinations such as evening primrose oil, red raspberry tea and black and blue cohosh are sometimes recommended by traditional midwives. However, they should only be used under medical supervision since many of these traditional herbal remedies have not been studied for safety or effectiveness.

A Slow Start
"One of the biggest problems with elective induction is unrealistic expectations," says Angela Ferrari, CNM, MS, a midwife practitioner with BirthPartners in Portland, Maine. "Really, it can be very difficult to get a woman into labor." In fact, Ferrari says, if a woman isn't already on the verge of going into labor on her own, "It can take about three days to get a labor started." In such a case, a woman may be exhausted by the time she experiences a progressive labor.
