Passing the Pregnant Time
5 Things to Do While Waiting for Baby
By Shel Franco
Even if you've never felt particularly crafty in your lift, pregnancy is a great time to give it a try. "I [decided] that I had to learn to cross-stitch and make something very specific for my children from their mother," Janero says. "I did do that for each of my children."
If you've always wanted to learn to draw or paint, check out classes at your local craft shop or art supply store. Scrapbooking is another popular endeavor for moms-to-be. The skills you learn creating your first albums will serve you well as you create future albums for your new child.
You can also give belly casting a try. Using water and plaster-based strips of cloth, your bulging belly is coated. The result is a solid reminder of how your body grew and changed during pregnancy. Do-it-yourself kits are available online and in some craft stores. You can also have your belly professionally cast at a specialty studio in your area.
The "nesting" instinct is a well-known pregnancy activity. "I especially remember waiting for the end of my first pregnancy," says Courtney Horrigan of Pittsburgh, Pa. "I constantly cleaned, straightened and organized the house."
This focus on the home can take many forms. While one woman might focus on organizing, another might obsess over the perfect nursery, and still others might set out to finish long overdue projects, like kitchen remodeling and new additions.
The idea of readying the house for Baby is nothing new, but few peope may be aware of the therapeutic effect all this tidying and planning can have on a mom-to-be. "Honestly, I've always felt less stressed when things are neat and organized, so I think that my constant cleaning was a way to get myself prepared for the big challenges ahead," Horrigan says.
