A Guide to Ultrasounds

No matter how tempted you are, do not try to self-diagnose. Save the counting of fingers and toes for the delivery room. And whatever you do, don't read into the sonographer's facial expressions or hesitation to divulge information. "Generally, the ultimate interpretation of all the acquired information by ultrasound is done by the physician in charge," Nazeri explains. "Many times, the doctors need to review the ultrasound images at a later time and compare them with sonograms done earlier in the pregnancy. Moreover, by knowing the patient's other clinical evaluations, the physicians can reach a more accurate diagnosis."

As a diabetic, Jackie Williams of Pittsburgh, Pa. went through multiple ultrasounds to determine the weight of her baby. "At the 8-month ultrasound, I was nervous," she says. "I kept asking the technician if the baby was measuring big, if everything looked good. She just kept skirting the question."

Williams left feeling discouraged and voiced her concerns to her doctor. The doctor cleared up matters by telling Williams that the sonographer was not at liberty to divulge information – that is the doctor's job.

Boy or Girl
What about gender? Can the sonographer reveal that information? They can, and most do. Make sure you check with your doctor first.

"The first thing the ultrasound tech said when I climbed up on the tale was my doctor didn't allow her to reveal the baby's sex," Paul says. "I was crushed. I hate to say it, but finding out what we were having was the biggest reason why I wanted a second ultrasound."
