Postpartum Depression in Canada

Support and Treatment
Once the awareness of a possible problem exists, it is important to seek help immediately. But not all areas have specific resources for women with postpartum depression. Weiner was lucky to have a caring and considerate doctor who has helped her but she says that she doesn't know of any postnatal services for women within her area. "I don't think the government does anything at all to address postpartum depression, and if they are, they are not publicizing these services," she says.

Angela Spiers of Newmarket, Ontario agrees. She experienced symptoms such as agitation, crying and an inability to sleep. When she told her doctor about these symptoms at a postnatal visit, it was not addressed. Spiers says that with 20 other women sitting in the waiting room, he calmly mentioned to her that '"it would pass'" and went to see his next patient.

Spiers eels that there should be services available that look at the biopsychosocial aspect of having a baby. Aside from the medical aspect, the transition to parenthood is a major life change, especially in our Western society with its emphasis on financial success and being constantly busy. "Many women are completely isolated in the suburbs without the communal support that our ancestors provided," says Spiers.

After obtaining support from her husband and mother and receiving treatment including medication from her family doctor, Spiers decided to do something about the lack of support for women with postpartum depression in her community. She teamed up with a number of community agencies and wrote a proposal to the Ontario Trillium Foundation
