Postpartum Depression in Canada

, seeking funds to initiate a comprehensive support program to address the gap in postnatal programs and services. She received a grant of $35,000 to support the strategic development and fund-raising strategies for a charitable organization to be known as Journey Support Services.
"Our agency will be supporting families adjusting to the postnatal experience," says Spiers. "In other words, dads, concerned friends and families are welcome to attend. We are looking forward to having services beginning next year."
"If you suspect that you are experiencing postpartum depression, it's important to seek help from your caregiver," says Douglas. "You may also want to consider going for counseling or joining a postpartum depression support group so that you can share your experiences with other moms who are struggling with the same problem. It's also important to get plenty of rest and to eat properly and to avoid caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes."
Partners of women with postpartum depression can be key to helping new moms figure out what they're dealing with, as well as assisting in the recovery period.
Some suggestions on how to help include:
- Listen to her feelings, and let her know that you accept her.
- Avoid pretending it isn't happening.
- Don't be critical or judgmental.
- Provide her with breaks.
- Don't pressure her about sex.
- Support her decision to seek help.
