10 Resolutions for New Parents and Parents-to-be

2. Take a Trip
Sabrina and Jim Schmik are planning on ringing in the New Year by taking a "baby-moon." "We know this may be our last chance to spend time alone together for a while," says Sabrina Schmik. "We're going to make the most of it and come home ready to be parents."

Whether you decide to finally visit the quaint bed and breakfast you've dreamed of staying in or you surprise your partner with a long weekend on the coast, resolve to take a couples-only trip. If possible, take a trip before the new baby arrives to have a chance to celebrate going away as a couple and returning home a family.

Setting off to explore a new location or revisit a favorite spot is more than a change of scenery. You'll have the chance to indulge yourselves and pay attention to each other. After your baby arrives, you'll be thankful you seized the opportunity to get away and be ready to begin planning trips as a family. If Baby has already arrived, see if arrangements can be made for a trusted family member to watch her while you get away for a weekend – or even for a day trip.

3. Patience Truly Is a Virtue
Resolving to be patient sounds much easier than real life often permits. Few parents realize that losing patience with a child who is misbehaving is also a sign of losing patience with themselves. The frustration of running errands, sleeplessness or refereeing sibling quarrels can deplete your reserve of patience.

Becoming irritated with the rigors of parenting is natural. Recognizing you're on the verge of losing your patience is not always quite as simple. Resolving to accept your limitations, abilities and attributes will help you keep your cool and feel less overwhelmed.
