  • If you have forewarning of a Cesarean section, bring a maternity belt with you to the hospital -- an elastic band that helps support your belly in the later months of pregnancy. Tightly wrap it around your body and over the bandages. It helps holds you together and provides a lot of relief.

  • Buy a Boppy or some other breastfeeding pillow. This really helps to put the baby into the proper breastfeeding position and it takes the pressure off the incision area.

  • Contact your local La Leche League and find the names and numbers of La Leche League leaders and lactation consultants before you go into the hospital. If you have troubles, don't wait, call immediately. Problems rarely go away -- they usually escalate. And then, before you know it, the baby is weaned.

  • baby If you find that you are home after a Cesarean section and have been the victim of circumstances leading to a poor start with breastfeeding, don't despair. La Leche League leaders and lactation consultants can help fix almost any breastfeeding problem.

There will be days when you feel like you'll never make things work, so take some advice from Thomson: "It is important for moms to know that no matter what happens in the hospital, if they want to breastfeed their baby, they will."
