Makeovers for New Moms
Diane Gardner Provides Expert Postpartum Beauty Advice
By Belinda Clarke
est recommendations about what to keep and what to toss. Primarily, she is looking for colors that are inappropriate for her clients' skin tones or items which are either outdated, as in "many seasons ago," or work against the look her client is going for.
"I use the best quality makeup available and the least amount of it," she says. "The most important factor is the proper selection of color. The old Hollywood techniques, combined with today's products, enable me to make my postpartum clients look their absolute best."
Gardner herself uses only Chanel makeup, which she admits is not cheap but "is worth every penny." Specifically, she likes that Chanel tends to incorporate less pigment into its makeup line, which is better for women seeking a natural look. "I have found that the more intense the pigment in the makeup women use, the older they look," Gardner says. "Most of the women I work with want to de-emphasize the signs of aging, and that is best achieved with a 'less-is-more' approach."
After the makeover, Gardner is happy to write down the specific names and colors of the makeup products she uses so her clients can replicate the look at home. She'll even give you the formulas for the hair color products so the same color can be achieved elsewhere at other salons.
Lastly, she recommends that to get great hair, it actually pays to adhere to the "100 strokes with the hairbrush every night at bedtime" adage. "Of course you should use the right hairbrush, one which has both nylon bristles to help stimulate the scalp and natural bristles to help distribute your hair's natural oils that elp keep it shiny," Gardner says.
