Bundle up and Brave the Snow

Snow Sports Safety
During Pregnancy

It's a crisp day in the mountains and you're raring to go. But what are your options? If the only winter sport that pops to mind is downhill skiing, which you want to avoid, you'll be surprised what you can do outdoors this winter – even while pregnant. Cross-country skiing is extremely popular and snowshoeing is gaining fans. And I won't even get into all the good exercise you can get simply trooping to the store on a wintry morning or strolling around the resort admiring the glint of the moon on the glistening trees.

Downhill Skiing
An old winter favorite, downhill or Alpine skiing has lured women to the slopes for decades. The speed and sheer energy of a downhill run can be hard to resist. But for most of us, it is not a safe idea during pregnancy. Why? The speed and sheer energy. Your risk of taking a bad tumble and getting tangled in skis is just too high if you're not an expert skier.

If you are an experienced skier, you can head to the slopes during your first trimester, when your fetus is safely tucked behind your pubic bone. But after week 12, even a mild bump on your behind can really rattle your uterus.

Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing is excellent exercise easy to learn, gentle on your joints and a safe choice during pregnancy. Since you're using both your arms and legs, you build muscle and really get your heart pumping. If you stick to flat, groomed trails, you are not likely to fall. But that's only half the attraction. Five minutes down the trail, you hit peace and quiet.
