Make Baby Your Exercise Partner

Australian researchers report that women in a 12-week stroller walking class showed fewer symptoms of postpartum depression than those in mom-baby playgroups that did not involve exercise. "It helps phenomenally with the baby blues," says Susan Glosby, CEO for the California-based Stroller Strides. "Exercise is such a great stress release anyway. You have the other moms' support as a stress release, too."

Before working for Stroller Strides, Glosby, the mother of two boys, Morgan, 3, and Tristan, 5, was originally a client. Glosby says exercising with other mothers helped her shed her baby weight.

"I'm actually a lower weight now," she says. "I am beyond my pre-pregnancy weight. I'm in better shape now after having two kids and participating in Stroller Strides than I was before I had kids."

Though dads are invited to participate in Stroller Strides classes, most of the members are women. Glosby says many of the exercises are especially geared toward new moms.

"We get so hunched over as new moms," she says. "Our shoulders roll in so much when we are moms. We are constantly bending over to pick up the kids. We are nursing or bottle-feeding. We always have that hunched-over position so we do a lot of work about bringing shoulders back and opening up the chest and building your muscles in your back to build your posture."
