Working Single
How These Moms Cope with Minimal Help
By Megan L. Fowler
"I don't really have the option of choosing whether or not to work full time while raising a child," says Julie Horton, a vice president in communications with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce in South Carolina. "So I've cobbled together a support system that helps me with taking care of Chandler, now 8 years old, while I'm working."
Since her ex-husband has been out of the picture since her daughter was 3, Horton has depended on friends, family, neighbors, an in-home sitter and a church-run daycare facility to help her out. "I used to have a wonderful lady to keep Chandler during the day," says Horton. "She also would keep Chandler if I had to work late or at night, and I always felt comfortable with her, because I knew she loved my child and spent quality time on 'learning' games like alphabet to reading to good manners to potty training."
"Since Chandlr is now going to school, she attends her elementary school during the day, and the church daycare picks her up from school and takes her to the church in the afternoons," she says. "If I have to work late or if I have after-hours events, I look for the help [elsewhere] to pick her up from church until I'm able to get home. It's sometimes very complicated, but each weekend, I look ahead at the next two weeks on my calendar and begin making the necessary arrangements if I need some help."
