Tips for Reducing Your Chances of Operative Vaginal Delivery

By Dr. Christian Pope

Diabetic mothers have a higher incidence of having larger babies and more difficult labors – in fact there is a close correlation between their blood sugar control and the size of their babies. Therefore, I would recommend that diabetic mothers try to keep tight control of their sugars to avoid larger babies.

Many mothers hear of their friends having their labors induced. There are really very strict indications for labor induction. An elective labor induction is not an appropriate reason and can get the mother (and baby) in trouble, especially in first-time pregnant moms. In fact, an elective induction has been shown to have higher failure, instrumental and Cesarean rates in first-time mothers. Therefore, there is nothing saved or ameliorated by an elective labor induction "just because the calendar says it is time."

Expecting moms should participate in prenatal and birthing classes to help educate them about the labor process and the potential avenues a labor may follow so there are no surprises when the actual time arrives.

Try to stay in good physical condition. In the absence of obstetric or medical complications, pregnant women can continue to exercise and derive related benefits.
