Store Nature's Baby Foods for Your New Arrival

"When we were going out, all I'd have to do is grab a plate and a bag of frozen baby food," says Ward, who also froze pureed meats mixed with applesauce or pear sauce. "By the time we got to where we were going, it would be thawed and an instant balanced baby meal."

The ice cube tray method is a smart way to slowly introduce your infant to different foods, Berkey says.

"As you're introducing new foods to Baby, they're not always going to enjoy it the first time, so you're not wasting it by opening a whole jar of food," she says.

Berkey discovered this firsthand as the mother of now 2-year-old Kirsten. Having prepared and frozen such produce as carrots, sweet potatoes, squash and zucchini when her daughter was about 4 months old, she eventually learned that not everything was a hit with Kirsten. The just-right serving sizes came in handy at that point, and she even discovered another way to make the most of the baby food delectable even if her daughter didn't care for it: She took unwanted portions and used them as a base for vegetable soup.

With a little time and effort, baby food made with fresh fruits and vegetables can last well into the fall and winter months. If you're interested in trying it, nutrition experts and parents encourage the experience.

"I'm an advocate of feeding systems that work for parents," Henstenberg says. "If parents are really into this, that's great."

"It should just be a fun experience," says DiGiacomo. "I don't think anyone should go into it thinking they have to do this. It can be a lot of fun going down to the farmer's market and even the grocery store when things are in season. It's really satisfying that you have provided the best thing that you can to your child."
