Warm Weather Tips for Moms-to-be

"Pregnant women may be more sensitive to sunburn," says Dr. Berson. "Women should be more attentive to their skin and sun exposure. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Sunscreens made with titanium dioxide or transparent zinc oxide may be more preferable to use because of how they feel and because they contain less chemicals. Pregnant women need to use a high SPF of 30 or more. This will help to prevent melasma, often called the 'mask of pregnancy,' which causes skin discolorations to occur on the face around the upper lip onto the forehead."

Pregnancy hormones interacting with the skin's exposure to the sun cause melasma. This is why women need to apply sunscreen every day, not just at the beach and pool, stresses Dr. Berson. She also suggests wearing tightly woven clothing made of a breathable material such as cotton and investing in a wide full-brimmed hat to protect the often-overlooked areas of the head, neck and ears.

Should I Avoid Theme Park Rides?

"Don't use any rides which whip the body about at high speeds like roller coasters or high, fast water slides," says Barnett. "Most amusement parks will post a precaution on the rides that are not for pregnant women, so observe any restrictions." Think twice before going on spinning rides. Even if they are slow, like a merry-go-round, they can still make you nauseous or dizzy. Stick to the kiddie rides – it will be good practice for when the little one arrives!
