Far From the Home I Love
Pregnancy and Childbirth Around the World
In remote Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Jennifer Oestreicher is pregnant with her third child. "We have problems with the dairy products. We have to drink either Russian produced UHT milk (awful tasting and not that trustworthy) or boiled local milk (even more awful tasting), so I don't drink much milk." She adds, "Prenatal vitamins are not available here, so I had some sent from North America."
From speaking with other expatriates in Mongolia, Oestreicher knows that gynecological/obstetric care leaves much to be desired. "Apparently D&Cs are done here – but without anesthetic. One expat I know of actually fainted from the pain."
Oestreicher does have regular ultrasounds, but she explained that the technicians use a unique system for determining the baby's gestational age. "If the baby is looking big or small for date, they simply change the due date, rather than noting that there may be a problem with the size of the baby."
