Blessingways
A Mother-Centered Celebration
By Kelly Burgess
As a doula, Jacquelyn Smith of Victoria, B.C. Canada, has facilitated many Blessingways, but never managed to have one of her own because both of her pregnancies ended with emergency inductions due to pre-eclampsia. Her experience led her to create a kit for do-it-yourself Blessingways for those who, like her, have health issues that may cause them to give birth early, or for women who don't know other women in their community either because they're new or because they live in an isolated area.
"I kept reading about women who wanted Blessingways but couldn't have them and thought there had to be something out there for them and for women like me," says Smith. "These kits can even be used in early labor as a distraction."
This just shows how personalized and individualized a Blessingway should be. Which is the idea, no rules, just the strength of generations of strong women who became strong mothers.
