Bubble Baths

Safely Soaking Your Cares Away When Pregnant

As long as she is careful, experts say there are more positives than negatives to taking a bubble bath. "I took bubble baths with my first six pregnancies," says Deborah Illes, a mother from Upper Hutt, New Zealand. "I found bubble baths to be very relaxing, especially at night if I had trouble sleeping." She used candles or lavender oil to create a relaxing, soothing atmosphere.

"It's important to treat yourself to something special to ease your mind of stress at a time when you are overwhelmed with worries," says Dr. Fink, who encourages his patients to pamper themselves with bubble baths.

Having your partner join you in the tub is a way to initiate intimacy. Often, especially as the pregnancy advances, the couple may not feel comfortable having a sexual relationship. "It's a nice way for the couple to connect, particularly in the third trimester," says Dehn.

A warm bubble bath also helps relieve the aches and pains of pregnancy. "It relaxes the pressure on the vulva region," says Dehn. It also soothes a sore back and legs. And since it seems like every part of a pregnant body is impossible to reach, a bubble bath can moisturize the entire body with ease.

Dr. Fink suggests keeping a bottle of water handy throughout the bath to avoid dehydration and to keep the temperature stable. Once the bath is over, let the water drain out of the tub before getting out, Dehn advises. This allows the body to cool slowly, keeping blood pressure from dropping.

"I'm a big believer in the idea that people need to take care of themselves," says Dr. Fink. "A bubble bath is a great way to give yourself a treat."
