T-shirt sayings can also be a good choice for sharing the news with slightly outrageous humor, says Beck. Her personal favorite is a shirt for dads that reads, "My boys can swim."

Karena Tapsak will never forget the way her brother- and sister-in-law announced their second pregnancy. The couple, an opera singer and an actor, told their families and the world about the impending new arrival during a performance of Anything Goes – while they were onstage! "I was [surprised] to hear it publicly with everyone else, and not in person," says Tapsak of northeastern Pennsylvania. "But when I think about it, it is totally fitting with who they are."

When to Tell

Many couples wait until after around 12 weeks to tell the world their joyful news – after 12 weeks your risk of miscarriage drops dramatically. However, the best time to tell may simply be whenever you feel ready, says Patricia Payne, a clinical assistant professor of nurse-midwifery education at East Carolina University. "If you do experience a miscarriage and you haven't told anyone, then you miss out on the support that friends and family would give you," Payne says.
