10 Things to Do or Have before Bringing Baby Home

8. Use Red Ink, Baby: Yes, you will be exhausted constantly. And yes, sex will not only get placed on the back burner, it will get pushed right off the stove if you let it. Draw a big red heart on the calendar indicating the date by which you promise you will get jiggy again. Continue to draw the hearts, as a commitment to connect with your sweetie, until the baby is less demanding or your sex life resumes some normalcy on its own. You – and your spouse – will be glad you did.

9. Sing, Sing a Song: Make your mental list now, before the baby arrives – five songs you can sing while you rock, pace, jiggle and cajole your screaming bundle of joy. Personal recommendations: Jingle Bells, the Oscar Meyer® baloney song, your college fight song. The baby won't know the difference; just make sure it's short, repetitive and something with a good beat because you'll be wearing the carpet thin singing to them and dancing at 2 a.m.

10. Stroller and Swing: Yes, they are two items, but when it comes to what they do, their goal is the same: preserve your sanity. Purchase a smooth-moving stroller so you can join the outside world as soon after the birth as possible. (The three-wheeled jogging type is normally reserved for children 1 year and older.) Whether you walk the neighborhood or seek out other parents in the middle of the mall, mobility is key. As for the swing? Babies are soothed and mesmerized by the gentle back-and-forth motion. Many a fussy baby has been immediately quieted, as has many a fussy parent, by the magic wrought in the baby swing.
