A Month-by-Month Primer

  • Plan ahead! What's going on in the six weeks or so after your baby is born? You're going to be tired, maybe sore and perhaps recovering from surgery. Deal with any special issues occurring during that time frame now. For example, if your child is due in mid-October and you have older children, outfit them for Halloween in September so you do not have to deal with it and a new baby.
  • Ninth Month
    • This is the time to rest, reflect and pamper yourself. Stacy Canzonieri of Denville, N.J., had a prenatal massage, which she described as "amazing." Order a few items for rejuvenating yourself, such as foot cream or belly cream.
    • Pack your bag for the hopsital. Vicki Iovine, author of Girlfriends' Guide to Pregnancy (Pocket, 1995), suggests including the following:
      1. Your own shampoos, soaps and lotions.
      2. Your own soft pillow.
      3. Bedroom slippers and lots of socks.
      4. Lip balm.
      5. Maternity underwear. Lots!
      6. Something non-perishable to eat so you don't have to wait for someone to bring you something when you're hungry.
      7. Camera and film – just toss a disposable in your bag so you know you have one.
