It's Getting Hot in Here

Keep Cool While You're Pregnant
During the Summer Months

Summer TLC
Your legs and feet will quickly show signs of any exertion, so Dehn advises soaking swollen legs and feet in cool water. "As well, try to elevate them as much as possible," she says. "And if you have access to a pool, then by all means, get in it. Try to keep your whole body cool. If no pool is available, then a cool bath or several cool showers can keep you from getting too hot – especially right before bed. Air-conditioning is also a welcome relief, but be careful when moving from a place with air-conditioning to the hot outdoors because the rapid change in temperature can cause you to feel a little faint."

Skincare is also incredibly important in the summer months. Your skin is changing and can be more sensitive thanks to hormonal changes, which means you may be more prone to sunburns. "Women should take extra precautions in terms of sun exposure, using large hats for shade and sunscreen of at least SPF 40," says Dr. Johnson.

And for those in the final trimester extra precautions should be taken. "Women should be encouraged to increase their water intake to 10 to 12, 8-ounce glasses per day and rest more often also," says Dr. Johnson. "I suggest two 20-minute rest periods per day, keeping feet elevated above the heart to reduce swelling in the legs. And as the baby approaches term, the stomach is compressed and frequent small meals help the woman feel more comfortable."

In the heat of the summer, comfort can be worth its weight in gold – just ask Cousens and her fellow moms who've weathered the hot, humid months with success.
