Good Posture While Expecting

The Straight Facts
on Good Posture During Pregnancy

Dr. Woggon says women who are pregnant tend to have a forward head posture that may be seen as a rounding of the shoulders. The posture may lead to a compression of the thoracic cavity, which may diminish lung capacity.

Dr. Woggon compares the stress of a forward head posture to a person carrying their groceries by holding them way out in front of themselves instead of holding them close. "A person who has forward head posture has to work a lot harder to hold their head up," he says. "They really have to concentrate on standing up straight, not slouching and keeping their chin up. The big thing is whenever they are sitting they should have something on their lower back for support. Stay off of soft couches and chairs where you just slump."

Instead, choose a straight-backed chair and maintain a pelvic tilt. Put a pillow in the small of your back for extra support.

Dr. Woggon suggests seeing a chiropractor for a pregnancy adjustment, which is gentle and specific for pregnant women. Also, try various exercises, but make sure to pick ones that will not throw off your already delicate sense of balance. He recommends standing up straight against the wall and gently pushing your head backwards into the wall. "Because your center of gravity changes, pick exercises where you are stable," he says.
