Cycling Mama

Should Moms-to-be
Take up Bicycling?

  • Adjust your bicycle for your new body shape. As your stomach size increases, your posture will need to become more erect when riding. Your handlebars and seat should be adjusted to accommodate your new changes in posture and shift in center of gravity. Readjust your bike to your new shape.
  • Make sure you are gaining weight properly. Check with your doctor about how much you should be gaining and when you should notice those gains.
  • If you discover your balance is becoming a concern, switch to a stationary bicycle. A stationary bicycle is a wonderful low-impact way to exercise that makes balance and falls less of a concern.
  • Dress appropriately. Make sure your clothes are comfortable and accommodating for activity. Always wear a helmet.
  • Ride with a buddy. Safety should always be a concern, and a companion ensures you have someone available in case of difficulties.
  • Carry some means to communicate, such as a cell phone, in order to alert someone if and when problems arise.
  • It is often inadvisable to bicycle into your second and third trimesters due to the possibility of falling. Take precautions not to risk the health of you or your unborn child.
  • Ask your doctor what exercises are advised for you and your special needs.
  • Your first concerns should always be for your own safety and the safety of your child. That may mean making choices about your habits and activities that aren't always easy. If you feel uncomfortable in any way when bicycling, select another form of exercise. There are many other alternatives that will also provide you with healthy, safe fitness routines.
