The Need for Social Support
during Pregnancy

Social Support's Impact on Baby

A study published in the September/October 2000 edition of the medical journal, Psychosomatic Medicine, revealed that an infant's birth weight might be affected by the amount of social support a mother-to-be received during the course of her pregnancy. Women with several types of support from various sources during their pregnancy delivered higher birth weight babies than those without. The resulting relationship between social support and birth weight remained intact even after the study's researchers took into account other medical complications/factors that are often contributors to low birth weight, including premature delivery, a previous history of miscarriage or hypertension.

The results of the study emphasize that women who receive strong social support during pregnancy may also reap the benefits of a healthier lifestyle and behavioral choices and may be more likely to receive treatment for high blood pressure and heart and sickle cell disease, some of the many conditions that are all risk factors for low birth weight infants.
