Breathing Room

The Importance of Clean Household Air

By Mark Stackpole

"I have been using homemade cleaners (combinations of vinegar, water, borax and baking soda) for a couple of years now, and I no longer have to leave the house while it's being cleaned," says Salomon. "And unlike before, I don't have labored breathing for the rest of the day." She also avoids hairsprays and perfumes and uses perfume-free and dye-free detergent, as washing her sheets in regular detergent triggered asthma attacks.

A big change in Salomon's health came about when she moved to a new house. "I improved immensely when we moved because our first house was an 80-year-old bungalow and probably had decades of mold, dust and roach debris in the walls," she says.

For the past year, she has served as a board member for Mothers for Clean Air, a nonprofit organization concerned with air pollution in the Houston-Galveston area and its effects on children's health. Salomon is currently working to improve the indoor air quality in homes and in schools nationwide by getting them to pay attention to the potentially problematic ingredients used in some common cleaners.

A Growing Concern
Jason Earle is an indoor air-quality expert and the founder of Lab Results, LLC, an air-quality consulting firm based in Princeton, N.J. When he was 4, his family was devastated to learn that he had been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. After his persistent mother demanded a second opinion, a different picture emerged. Earle actually had asthma compounded by pneumonia and was allergic to nearly everything in his environment.
