Mom-to-be Mother's Day
An Alphabetical Recipe for a Happy Day
By I.J. Schecter
Assuring your partner she'll be a great mom is important; thanking her for carrying the baby is doubly so. The further along the pregnancy gets, the more she'll appreciate hearing how grateful you are, how amazing she's been and how you could never do it in a million years.
8. Halt the talk. Don't just avoid sports-related TV; impose a complete halt on sports-related talk for the entire day, too. This means not one mention of your fantasy team's performance or a single complaint about your wicked sprain sustained during last week's pick-up game. "I can't imagine a better gift to give my wife than total cessation of any sports-related talk for 24 hours," says Andrew Weir of Toronto, Canada, dad to 2-year-old Maya and expecting his second soon. "She'd think she'd died and gone to heaven."
9. In Style. Or People. Or Vanity Fair. Doesn't matter which. Your goal is to help distract her from her physical discomfort, and few things will do it better than celebrity rags.
10. Jammies. To an expectant mommy, sometimes the best gift is a snuggly pair of new pajamas. Slippers can also do the trick. Or a comfy robe. Or just one of your old T-shirts wrapped in a box.
11. Kit-Kats. Whether in the form of truffles or a Hershey bar, if you don't include chocolate as part of the day, well then, you're just missing the boat altogether.
12. Lunchtime. While starting and ending the day with you is, of course, every woman's dream, arranging lunch for her with one or two of her girlfriends is a nice touch. This way, she gets to spend at least part of the day talking about how ridiculous men are.
13. Meals. Breakfast in bed? Good. Reservations at a nice restaurant? Great. But i you really want to make her feel special, do both, book-ending the day memorably.
