Mom-to-be Mother's Day

An Alphabetical Recipe for a Happy Day

By I.J. Schecter

20. Tidy up. Whether it's her first trimester or her last, the nesting instinct is laying in wait, meaning one of the most valuable things you can do for her is to become a one-man tidying crew. Get those rubber gloves on. Sweep, mop, dust, polish. Don't stop until you break a sweat.

21. Understanding. No doubt you're already a paragon of tolerance toward her constant complaints. But just in case you fall into the same category as the other 99 percent of us, try to make this the day where you let her spout off without saying anything besides, "Honey, I really sympathize. Or at least as much as I can. I mean, there's no way I can relate to what you're going through."

22. Verse. Express your feelings on paper, even if they sound silly or forced. "I'm under no illusion that my poems sound like Wordsworth," says Weir. "But they're from the heart."

23. Water. Small gestures – like making sure there's always a glass of water within her reach – go a long way. Why? They let her know you're thinking of her first and everyone else second.

24. Xtra effort in areas she usually handles. In other words, scrub the shower tiles, do the grocery shopping and pick up your own ratty underwear after you fling it onto the floor. Or don't fling it in the first place, of course.

25. Yummies. It might be M&Ms. Or it might be sour chews. Perhaps it's Cherry Garcia. Whatever her treat preference, find out what it is and make sure you include it in the day.

26. Zs. Sure, she might want to spend the day being coddled and told how great a mom she'll be. Then again, she may just want to crash. Whatever her preference, don't take it personally. Just be there.
