Frugal and Fashionable

Saving Money on Maternity Clothes

Sherri Spaw, the owner of Her Special Time Maternity in Wesley Chapel, Fla., says it's easy to find bargains online. "Depending where you live you can find some good bargains at the end of the season," Spaw says. "If you are shopping online, it may be 30 degrees where you live but here in Florida it's 80 degrees."

Spaw says women don't need to spend a fortune on new maternity clothes to look fashionable. She suggests investing in quality maternity jeans and slacks to last the entire pregnancy. Then, mix and match by bringing in less expensive T-shirts or maternity tops.

"I have people who are on their second or third babies and they don't want to be frumpy this time," Spaw says. "They want to wear more fashionable pieces. For a mom-to-be, fashion does not mean they have to spend $200 on a pair of jeans. I ask moms when they come in if they work or stay at home. If they work, we help them tailor their wardrobes by taking a simple white blouse and pair of nice maternity slacks, and adding accessories they already own."

Temptation to Shop
Ann Douglas, a mother of four from Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, and the author of 27 books on pregnancy and parenting, says the impulse to shop is not unusual for women during their nesting stage. "You absolutely have to be wary of the temptation to overspend during pregnancy because, first of all, you have nine and a half months to shop," Douglas says. "And you can get very excited and you can fall into the trap of thinking that everything has to be new for your baby, when in fact you don't necessarily have to have everything brand new."

Since maternity clothes often get little wear, Douglas suggests going to a secondhand boutique. "You can find things that look new because people only wear them for a few months," she says. "That's assuming a woman has a large enough wardrobe that she is not wearing the same thing every day. Most of us do try to have a few things in our wardrobe so that we don't get sick to death of them."
