Mira Sorvino

The Oscar-winning Mom Talks Motherhood

By Elisa Ast All

Pages:  1  2

Acting used to be Mira Sorvino's main passion. The daughter of Law and Order star Paul Sorvino, Mira caught the acting bug early but didn't start pursuing the craft until she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1989 with a degree in Chinese. (She spent a year in Beijing writing her thesis and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.)

Her Ivy League education is in stark contrast to the part that won her an Oscar at age 29 for Best Supporting Actress in her role as an uneducated prostitute in the 1995 Woody Allen film Mighty Aphrodite. Even with the Academy Award, she may be best known for another ditzy role, the endearingly insipid Romy in the 1997 film Romy and Michele's High School Reunion.

These days, however, Mira has a much greater passion: her two children. Married in 2004 to actor Christopher Backus, the couple welcomed daughter Mattea Angel later that year. In May 2006, little brother Johnny Christopher was born, weighing 7 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 21 inches long.

While Mira still takes acting projects that she feels strongly about, such as the recent TV mini-series Human Trafficking, her focus has drastically changed. "You look at how far you've come in your career, and then you realize that you really want to be a mother," she says. "And that is so wonderful – both the realization and the experience of motherhood."

Mira's positive motherhood experiences began during her two pregnancies, which she enjoyed to the fullest. She notes that a simple approach is best during that time of life, even when it comes to clothing. "Women should invest in a few really great pieces, things that make them feel cute, because sometimes it's hard to look cute when you're pregnant!" she says. "And then get some fun items for everyday wear."
