Modern-day Doulas
Guiding Families Through Childbirth
By Kelly Camden, Certified Doula
Finding a Doula
Parents interview doulas during their second or third trimester. Once they have chosen their doula, they can arrange a prenatal visit with her. This time is used to get to know each other and discuss birth options, parents' preferences for care and to review the mother's previous birth experiences. As a mother nears her due date, her doula will be "on call" for her 24 hours a day. Following the birth, a doula can facilitate breastfeeding and bonding time with the baby. Some labor support doulas also provide postpartum care in the home.
