Overcoming the Fear of Caring

And it's important that families realize that premature babies are more resilient than many believe. "It's both true and reassuring to know that these babies can be very hardy little fellows," Dr. Burke says.

Never Enough Support
Smith says that parents shouldn't expect their fears and stress to immediately evaporate. Some studies indicate some families continue to battle with these emotions even up to two years after the birth.

And that's why support groups can be of great help to parents, with the most important support being family. If no family is nearby, many new parents can turn to their church or organized formal support groups for those with premature babies.

"The most important advice parents can hear is that they're in the process of becoming the world expert in the care of their premature newborn," Dr. Burke says. "They'll learn everything that we, as the medical team, can teach them about caring for a premature baby. With reference to their own child, however, they're not only going to become our equal in the care of their child, but in many ways they're going to become our superior. Loving parents become so attuned to their children that they can often pick up on things which physicians cannot perceive as quickly."

This alone should bring parents confidence that what they feel and what they do champions the needs of their children – when they're newborns and beyond.
