How Can You Get Relief When Carrying Twins?

Janet Gregory of Pine Township, Pa., is just glad she never was a stomach sleeper. Late in her pregnancy with her twin boys, Reed and Robert, she was constantly trying to find a comfortable position, even on her side.

"Pillows, pillows and more pillows, that was my secret," Gregory says. "I had one of those full body pillows that I would put along my back to kind of lean against, and then five or six very soft regular-sized pillows that I would use to tuck in wherever I felt I needed support. That would help me sleep comfortably for an hour or two, until I got uncomfortable in that position; then I'd wake up and rearrange everything."

Gregory didn't let her husband off the hook, either, saying that she would wake him up to help with the rearrangement just so he didn't "miss out on the fun of a multiple pregnancy."

Double Discomfort
After about the sixth month, very few pregnancies are without some kind of discomfort associated with a growing abdomen. Double that for a twin pregnancy and it can result in an uncomfortable few months.

Dr. Barbara Luke, co-author of When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads (HarperCollins, 1999), notes some common pregnancy discomforts that may be multiplied with a twin pregnancy, as well as some suggestions for easing the discomfort:
