A Look at Homeopathy
Will Homeopathy Work for You?
By Kelly Camden, Certified Doula
The system of medicine known as "homeopathy" functions on the assumption that "like cures like." Homeopathic formulas stimulate the body to begin healing itself. They can be used to facilitate healing of chronic illness, minor imbalances or a present emotional state.
Homeopathy is not a bandage, masking signals that the body displays, but rather a gentle method of working with the underlying cause of the problem. Using homeopathy can be a refreshing alternative to the standard approach of Western medicine.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, we usually try to avoid putting medications and chemicals into our bodies, which makes homeopathy a sensible option. Homeopathic remedies, which are not chemical drugs, are considered to be safe for people of all ages. Homeopathics are nontoxic and free of side effects. They don't need to be swallowed, because they dissolve in the mouth. They don't upset the stomach or cause constipation.
Many midwives offer homeopathic remedies as part of their services for pregnant, birthing and postpartum women. Even infants can be treated homeopathically. Common problems, such as nausea, constipation, postpartum blues and colic can be improved with homeopathy. Homeopathy is accessible and inexpensive as well as effective.
Anemia
The volume of blood in the body increases by one-third during pregnancy. Women can build their iron stores by eating dark, leafy greens and red meat.
