A Look at Homeopathy
Will Homeopathy Work for You?
By Kelly Camden, Certified Doula
Ferrum Phosphoricum: Although this remedy is made from iron phosphate, it does not cause an upset stomach or constipation. Helpful when "the woman may appear lethargic and have poor skin color," according to Skye Lininger, the author of The Natural Pharmacy (Rocklin, Prima Publishing, 1998).
Constipation
Constipation can easily occur when a person is not getting enough fiber and water in their diet. During pregnancy, the need for fiber and water increases. It is best for people to have at least one bowel movement per day, if not two or three.
NuxVomica: Indicated for those who "work too hard, exercise too little and drink and eat too much ... have the urge to defecate but are unsuccessful, passing only a small quantity," according to Lininger.
Sepia: For hard stools that are difficult to pass, with a heavy sensation in rectum following a bowel movement.
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are areas of stagnant blood in the rectum. They may not be bothersome, or they may bulge, itch or bleed.
Arnica: This remedy, which helps to alleviate bruising and muscle soreness, is also helpful to "women who suffer from hemorrhoids after childbirth," Lininger says.
Calcarea Fluorica: This remedy helps a person with hemorrhoids accompanied by itching and low back pain. There may be gas and constipation as well.
Hamamelis: This is the homeopathic form of witch hazel, which can be taken during a flare up or period of irritation.
Insomnia
Sometimes women have trouble sleeping during pregnancy. They may fall asleep initially, but find themselves lying awake in the early hours of the morning. The cause may be physical or emotional. Some remedies for stress related insomnia include these:
Aconite 30c: Aconitum "is very effective to calm and quiet nervous tension and fears," according to Elizabeth Davis, author of Hearts and Hands: A Midwife's Guide to Pregnancy and Birth
