Gifts Wrapped in Pink and Blue

25 Ways to Welcome the New Mom and Baby

Flowers? Balloons? Jewelry? Throw in a box of chocolates and congratulations and you've taken care of every gift-giving clich矫nown to man (and woman). It's time for you to flex your creativity when expressing your appreciation for the woman in your life.

There is one day of the year that is not marked on any calendar but your own, and it deserves to be celebrated. The mother of your child deserves to be celebrated. You are not likely to forget the day that she first comes home with your new baby in tow. What can you give her to welcome her home? What truly says, "I love you, respect you, admire you, appreciate you and want to support you in every way possible"? OK, maybe nothing says all that, but it doesn't mean you can't try. At the very least, try to put a new spin on some of those old favorites.

"Motherhood is an amazing experience, but one that you are never truly prepared for," says Valerie Swack of Zionsville, Ind., the mother of two young children and co-founder of BabyBrowns.com. "Even the most organized lady all of a sudden feels helpless. Not only is your body exhausted from carrying a baby for nine months, but the sleep deprivation compounds it all.

"Pampering Mom says a number of things: 'Thank you for all you have done and will do,' 'I'm here for you and look forward to this journey together' and 'Even though our lives have changed, and there is a new person to love, you are still the love of my life.'"

So What to Buy?
Swack has been asked by a lot of new fathers just what to do for the new moms in their lives. There are gifts that can be waiting for her upon her return, and there are things that a dad can do rather than buy.
