Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful
Prenatal Yoga with Gurmukh Khalsa
By Lyn Mettler
You may or may not recognize Gurmukh Khalsa's name, but you'll likely recognize her trademark white turban. And if you've seen or read anything recently about a pregnant celebrity, odds are they've studied with Khalsa. She has become the go-to person for pregnancy yoga, and each week students flock to her San Francisco studio, Golden Bridge Yoga, to take class.
One of her biggest fans is Cindy Crawford, who wrote the introduction to Khalsa's latest book, Bountiful, Beautiful, Blissful: Experience the Natural Power of Pregnancy and Birth with Kundalini Yoga and Meditation (St. Martin's Press, 2003). Crawford studied with Khalsa during both of her pregnancies, and she credits her two successful homebirths in part to the knowledge she gained during the classes.
Other celebrities who sing Khalsa's praises include Madonna, David Duchovny (yes, dads can do yoga too!), Rosanna Arquette, Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reese Witherspoon and actress Ione Skye.
During a typical class, she leads women through meditation, which she says helps women open their hearts and develop a relationship with their babies. She says the essence of yoga is about relationships and never is that more important than during pregnancy. Khalsa also works on stretching and hip-opening poses to help create space in the body for the baby. "When a woman feels cramped inside her body, she feels there's not enough room for her and her baby," she says.
