Baby Names As Creative As You Are

Unique Ways to Pick Baby's Name

"I started the Web site and decided, with Miranda's permission, to let people, originally just friends and family, have a say, you know, since we were testing names on them anyway," Mencher says.

There were initially 20 names to vote on, narrowed down to 10. Eventually, voting was opened up to all Web site readers. "The bottom line was if we can't figure it out, why not put this responsibility on other people's shoulders?" Mencher says. "And it worked out well. Over 1,000 votes were cast."

But, as Turner says, you shouldn't be swayed by others' opinions. When you find a name you love and can agree on, go with it.

On discovering the baby was a girl, the voting was further narrowed down. "Hannah" was the top contender at one point.

"With about two weeks left in the pregnancy, Miranda came home from work one day and said, 'I love the name Anna Reese,'" Mencher says. "I could see in her eyes that she was head-over-heels in love with this name. And even though it wasn't on the list (I guess I should have had a write-in section), other people's thoughts about what to name my child were irrelevant compared to what Miranda absolutely loved. I have no idea where she came up with the name, but I knew that this was the name for our baby."
