Using the System
Dr. Shoshana Haberman is the clinical director of Medical Informatics and director of the Perinatal Unit of the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. She found the system to be user friendly as compared to other IT systems in the hospital.

"It understands the specific needs of the provider at each moment of the patient's care and presents us with only the relevant data entry options for fast documentation and decision making," Dr. Haberman says. "After a short learning period, doctors, nurses and midwives at Maimonides felt comfortable using the system. In fact, I believe that Maimonides' staff would refuse today to go back and use paper charts again or any other 'simple' IT solutions."

Because IPROB integrates all the clinical data from all providers, Dr. Haberman has found that it gives a complete picture of the patient's status at any given moment.

"Beyond just integrating the data, the system's intelligent component is able to react to the clinical situation in real time and provide me with relevant prompts, reminders and easy-access options to the relevant order, actions, decisions, diagnoses and documentation items," Dr. Haberman says.

Dr. Haberman believes it also fills the communication gaps between providers. The real-time reminders and alerts, which are the core of this system, are essential in preventing errors resulting from staff failing to recognize important factors in the clinical picture as a whole, as well as providing guidance to junior-level staff in their clinical decision-making process.
