Only One Baby Shower?

When a baby is the focus of the baby shower, each new addition to a family should warrant one. "It's a way to meet the new little one, gives people a chance to get together and socialize and give a small gift to the new baby," Chapman says.

The no camp of multiple showers shares the same philosophy as Sharon Collachi, a mom of two from Fresno, Calif. "A shower is a gift to the mother-to-be from someone else," Collachi says. "It doesn't matter how many children a woman has; if she has been thrown her first shower she has already been welcomed into motherhood and additional showers are not needed and could be considered tacky, gift-grabs [or] selfish."

Being invited to a second shower for a friend or co-worker and not agreeing with it is not the opportunity to explain why they should not be having any more showers, though. Instead the invitee can politely decline the invitation and send along a thoughtful card or note sharing in their excitement and congratulating the mom and dad on the pending arrival.
